How the indexes are built
Each index applies a fixed-weight composite to scores derived from 105 official UK datasets, including ONS, Police UK, Ofsted, NHS, Land Registry, Met Office, and DEFRA. Pillar weights, eligibility rules, and source limitations are published on each index page.
Methodology is locked per version. Substantive changes ship as a new version (e.g. v1.0 → v2.0) rather than silent edits, so historical citations remain valid.
Citation
How to cite our indexes
Editorial use is welcome with attribution. The suggested citation for each index is shown in the methodology panel on its page, in two forms:
Full
BritPlace. (2026). [Index name] (vN.N). britplace.com/guides/[slug]
Short
Source: BritPlace [Index name] (vN.N).
Each index page has a "Copy citation" button that pulls the exact wording for that release.
About BritPlace
For your copy desk
Boilerplate: BritPlace is a free, data-driven service that scores and compares UK places to live across nine dimensions: affordability, safety, weather, green space, amenities, commute, education, environment, and health & wellbeing. The site covers around 3,500 areas, including 335 local authority districts, 700+ towns and built-up areas, and 2,500 postcode districts, drawing on 105 official UK government datasets including ONS, Police UK, Ofsted, NHS Digital, Land Registry, the Met Office, and DEFRA. Data is refreshed monthly. The site is free to use, methodology is published in full, and BritPlace does not sell leads to estate agents or property platforms.
Suggested phrasing: "According to BritPlace's [Index name] (vN.N), [headline finding]."
